21 Club
The 21 Club is celebrated for its founding as a speakeasy in 1920’s prohibition New York. It uses statues of jockeys lining the entrance, wrought iron gates, art-filled walls memorabilia on the ceiling of the bar, so that every corner tells a story. The story of the wine cellar is as celebrated as its contents. Built from a design by architect Frank Buchanan at the height of Prohibition in the 1930s, it’s a secret, federal agent-defying hideaway. However what impressed the Judges at The World’s Best Wine Lists awards was the way that the idiosyncratic cellar has been put to good use: the impressively long list at Club 21 features many mature vintages, not least in the “Opportunities” section. It is, as the judges said, ‘a great selection, with extra brownie points for putting so many wines on for a good price.’ Address: 21 West 52nd Street, New York, New York State 10019, United States
