Best Regional Wine List Outside Region

Many establishments seek to introduce the aromas and flavors of another country or region to their guests, having fallen in love with those wines for many and varied reasons. This category of Best Regional Wine List Outside the Region enables the Judges to celebrate those who build close relationships with a country’s or region’s wine producers, despite their physical distance. The successful lists demonstrate profound knowledge and understanding, as well as regional traits that enhance the dining experience in interesting ways. While these lists promote a particular country or region, Judges still consider the criteria of breadth, depth, height, balance, selection, accuracy, originality, suitability, design, and value.

Wallsé, New York (for Austria) - Global Winner 2021

Wallsé, one of a group of New York restaurants owned by Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner, is an upscale corner restaurant in New York with white table cloths, black chairs and art-filled walls, that is focused on traditional and contemporary Austrian and European recipes. Gutenbrunner was born in the small village of Wallsee on the Danube River where his family grew their own food and cooked with fresh produce, and this is the culinary heritage he displays in his menu and cookbooks.

During his apprenticeship he learned about the wine making process and grasped the importance of the interplay between food and wine. The focus of the concise wine list is on European, and Austrian, wines.
